How much does a natural hair wig cost?
A natural hair wig starts from around €640 for short, simple models, and most fall between €1,200 and €2,700 depending on the length, the density and the origin of the hair. Made-to-measure European hair pieces can exceed €2,700. It costs more than a synthetic one because it uses human hair, it can be styled and coloured just like your own, and it lasts between 2 and 3 years with good care.
What factors determine the price?
- Type of hair: natural hair costs more than synthetic fibre; heat-resistant fibre sits in between.
- Length: the longer it is, the more hair and the higher the price.
- Density: an extra-dense wig costs more than one with natural density.
- Type of base: from lowest to highest price: machine-sewn → mixed → hand-tied on monofilament and lace front.
- Origin of the hair (for natural ones): European hair is the finest and most natural, and the most expensive.
- Brand: premium brands (Ellen Wille, Jon Renau, Gisela Mayer) offer higher quality and a higher price.
- Made-to-measure personalisation: a wig made hair by hair for you is the most costly option.
Frequently asked questions about the price
Does an oncology wig cost more?
No. An “oncology wig” is not a price level but a cross-cutting category: comfortable, lightweight and breathable wigs suitable for treatment, which may be synthetic or natural hair. Their price is the same as that of any other wig of their type.
Does it carry reduced VAT?
No. In Spain, wigs are taxed at the standard VAT rate of 21%; they are not considered a medical product for reduced-VAT purposes. The price you see already includes VAT.
Will Social Security or my health fund reimburse me for the wig?
As a general rule, Social Security and CatSalut do not fund wigs for adults. There are, however, specific forms of assistance:
- AECC (Spanish Association Against Cancer): a wig bank offering free loans and hardship assistance.
- Barcelona City Council: a wig bank in collaboration with the AECC.
- MUFACE (civil servants): assistance of up to €200/year for a hair prosthesis.
